Senior Cloud Database Administrator
A rapidly scaling, high-growth enterprise in the retail sector is seeking a seasoned Senior Cloud Database Administrator to lead the management and optimization of its hybrid cloud and on-premises data infrastructure. This role plays a critical part in maintaining data integrity, improving system performance, and supporting scalable digital initiatives within a complex, multi-team environment.
Role Overview
This position offers the opportunity to own and enhance the performance and security of enterprise-grade cloud and on-premises database systems, impacting the organization’s data reliability and operational efficiency. The Senior Cloud DBA functions as an independent technical expert, collaborating across development, data engineering, and infrastructure teams to ensure robust data architecture and pipeline performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Optimize Azure SQL Database and Managed Instances by tuning queries, indexing, and database configurations for scalability and cost-efficiency
- Monitor and troubleshoot high-volume data pipelines, ETL workflows, and integrations, building solutions with Azure Data Factory and related cloud-native tools
- Manage database security, access controls, data masking, and encryption, ensuring compliance with enterprise security policies and data governance standards
- Oversee database backup and disaster recovery strategies, geo-replication, and high-availability configurations to meet strict RPO and RTO objectives
- Collaborate with software engineering and data teams to develop, test, and deploy scalable data environments and pipelines within Azure and hybrid on-prem/cloud setups
- Implement change management, schema updates, and automation scripts leveraging Azure native tooling
Core Qualifications & Requirements
- 5+ years of database administration experience, with at least 3 years specialized in Microsoft Azure SQL services
- Deep expertise in Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on-premises environments
- Proven track record designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting enterprise-level data pipelines and cloud databases
- Strong T-SQL programming skills, including query tuning, stored procedures, triggers, and views
- Experience with cloud automation, scripting, and deployment via Azure DevOps, ARM templates, or PowerShell
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) or Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203)
- Familiarity with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, or Microsoft Purview
- Knowledge of observability tools such as Datadog or similar platforms
- Experience with hybrid cloud/on-premises database architectures and performance tuning
